The building blocks to a healthy food system

In deciding how to structure FixOurFood, several planning workshops were held with different stakeholders from the Yorkshire food system and beyond. The team applied the Three Horizons approach to transformative thinking. They identified weaknesses in the food system and envisioned how they would like the food system in Yorkshire to look and feel in the future.

  • Transparent measures

    How can we measure change and success? This area envisions open, trustable data from all aspects of the food system that is used responsibly to model the impact on the planet. Which changes could make the biggest difference? When you know you can trust the numbers, it is easier to make policy changes.

  • Regenerative production the norm

    A new food system for Yorkshire needs regenerative production to be the norm. This area envisions the cost of sustainability incorporated into the cost of food, matched with a living wage that supports a sustainable diet. Farmers are rewarded for diversity and adopt practices that are productive and promote the replenishment of resources.

  • Reconnecting people with food and farms

    Do we know where our food comes from and its impact on the planet? This area envisions connectivity between food producers and consumers so everyone knows where their food has come from and the impact it has had on the planet. It allows farms to offset local greenhouse gas emissions to build climate resilience and encourages urban agriculture in more productive landscapes.

  • Redesigned food economy

    If we want Yorkshire to have a successful food system, we need to encourage local food businesses that promote social and environmental outcomes. This area envisions flourishing businesses which are rewarded for their carbon net negative production methods operating in a system where food waste is eliminated.

  • Equitable food systems

    Everyone should have access to sustainable, affordable food. This area envisions food security with equal access for all to healthy, sustainable, affordable food without supply chain issues.

  • Changing food norms

    For the Yorkshire food system to succeed, attitudes to food must change. This area envisions a system where food is valued for social benefits more than profit. Healthy food with reduced climate impact is the everyday choice and there is no negative impact on other countries from food consumed in Yorkshire.

  • Regenerative farmers

    Regenerative farming is at the heart of a transformed food system for Yorkshire. This area envisions farming as an integral, viable, critical part of the food system and a healthy planet. Trading is fair and equitable, leading to happy, productive farmers.
